Hornimans Pure Tea

Horniman's Tea company was founded in 1826 in Newport, Isle of Wight, England by John Horniman, and was moved to London in 1852. John H. was a pioneer in tea trade, because he was the first one who sold tea pre-packed in packets. This is said to have been revolutionary at that time and caused some troubles with business competitors. Before 1826, only loose tea had been sold, opening the possibility to adulterate the tea by worthless additives. Dishonest grocers might have added hedge clippings or dust to increase the weight.

Business was taken over by his son, Frederick John Horniman (1835-1906). He investigated much of his fortune for social purposes. From childhood, he had been an avid collector and continued this during his whole life and especially during travels worldwide (he started traveling not before the age of 60). He founded the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, South London. The museum, where his collections are on display, opened in 1901.  In 1911, a new building was designed by his son Emslie Horniman. The Horniman Museum (which houses 350,000 objects; 10% of these are from the original collection) has been open for the public for free until today. In 1918, the Horniman Tea Company was bought by J. Lyons, but the name lived on. Horniman‘s Tea was for sale in the USA until 1993.sti open, and still FREE!
