Eduard Messmer was born in 1824 in Baden-Baden, Germany. He was the son of the owner of the famous Hotel Messmer, which was visited regularly by German Emperor and Empress Augusta and Wilhelm I. Eduard Messmer opened a delicatessen trade in 1852 in Baden-Baden. Soon he also became interested in tea trade. This interest was initiated by the regular visits of the German Emperor and wife to the hotel of his father. The couple normally brought with them their own supplies of excellent tea—a present from the Tsar of Russia, because tea available in Germany was considered of too poor quality. When their supplies ran short, Eduard Messmer was in charge of finding Chinese tea which would satisfy the German royalties. |

He was very successful in this job, and was awarded the title “Hoflieferant” - Purveyor to The Court. In 1886, a branch of the company for tea trade was established in Frankfurt. Eduard’s son Otto Messmer (1858-1940) took over the tea trading business. In 1895, Messmer Tea became a protected brand name. The Messmer company was the first one in Germany to sell tea in packages (like Horniman in Great Britain). Eduard Messmer, the pioneer of German tea trade, died in 1910 in Baden-Baden. The tea company is still a flourishing company. Sine 1990 they are part of the OTG—Ostfriesische Teegesellschaft (http://www.otg.de/de/home/start).
