RIQUET

 

The Riquet company was founded in 1745. It was famous for chocolate and cocoa, but also tea and oriental goods. The home of Riquet was Leipzig. The house of the company, which can be visited today, was built in 1908/1909 and designed by the architect Paul Lange. The house displays a mixture of Art Noveau and Asian elements, among them two heads of elephants on the sides above the entrance door—the identifying mark of Riquet, which is found mostly on chocolate or cocoa product items. The roof of the Riquet house in Leipzig was damaged in WW2. Today the house is home to a café, a wine cellar and a local newspaper. It is said that the German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), when he was traveling, asked his wife to send to him regular supplies of his favorite Riquet chocolate.
